The Correlation Between Halloween And Presidential Politics
On November 4, Americans go to the polls to pick their new President. Four days earlier, adults go out trick-or-treating, many of them wearing costumes that represent their view of the current Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidates. Is there a correlation between their choice of Halloween costume and their more important choice of President?
Obama Halloween masks, John McCain masks and Sarah Palin costumes are flying out-of-the-door. Sorry, Senator Biden - you just don't seem to be inspiring Halloween purchases this year. So what are people using to transform themselves into their favorite presidential candidate? Obama supporters are mixing a store bought full mask with a standard dark suit. Dark black or dark blue both work. They need to look well tailored. McCain supporters are also starting out with a good McCain mask and a dark business suit. People can look at a few YouTube videos to see how their favorite Presidential candidate dresses.
A really popular costume this year is the Sarah Palin costume. Governor Palin has either won the hearts of people or has become a caricature - all depending on people's political views of her candidacy. The spoofs of Governor Palin on Saturday Night Live by Tina Fey have only added to the fun some people are having making a joke of her as the Vice-Presidential candidate. People who are firmly against the McCain-Palin ticket are using this as an opportunity to point out her beauty pageant roots. Costumes with a tiara or "first place winner" ribbon are two of the accessories being used to detract from her image as a potential VP. Some have added a rifle, a nice touch for those laughing at her love of hunting and guns. Whether people love her or hate her, they sure want to be her for Halloween.
With all the discussion about how to dress like the Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidates, it is worth looking at what those costume choices might actually mean. Halloween suppliers say sales of masks of presidential candidates have predicted the winner in the past several campaigns. In the past three elections, nationwide sales of U.S. Presidential candidate masks revealed the winner days before general election results were in. In 2004 the Spirit Halloween Presidential Index showed George W. Bush masks outselling John Kerry masks at a rate of 65% to 35%. In 2000 the George W. Bush mask took 57% of the sales vs. 43% for Al Gore. And in 1996 Bill Clinton masks were 71% of the market vs. 29% for Bob Dole. A fluke or a real predictor?
If there is any truth to the mask theory of predicting elections, then this is good news for the Obama team so far. As of the beginning of October, the Obama mask sales are leading the McCain mask sales by a factor of 67% to 33%. Since the election is still several weeks away, this could change quickly so it pays to keep an eye on "mask" sales this Halloween.
In conclusion, be sure to support your favorite Presidential candidate by voting on November 4. Election Day is a day where we can show our thanks for living in a democratic society where it is our right and privilege to cast our vote. And, just for extra luck, wear his mask this Halloween.
