What Do You Know About Politics
I know very little about POLITICS. I am not a political analyst nor would I want to be. All I know about politics is what I get from the news paper and TV.
Now I know that this is not the best way to keep up with what is going on because all of the news is slanted one way or the other. But when you listen is seems so easy to answer the basic questions.
It seems that all our elected representatives do in Congress is fight among themselves and get nothing done. We need to have something done now about our gas prices, however, our Speaker of the House has written a book and needs time off to do a book tour, so the House went on vacation. When can we expect them to do something that helps the average person?
We also, need to fix Social Security and Medicare, but again our representatives dont seem to be able to agree on any kind change. If this was my business Id fire the whole lot and start over with a new group. The old group would not get a pension either.
You know if we paid our Representatives on a piece work basis they might not take so long to find a solution to these problems.
Our founding Fathers would roll over in their graves if they could see how we have messed up what they started. They did not intend that we have a full time Congress in Washington. They intended to only bring the Congress together a few weeks per year and that these were not full time jobs. They sure did not intend a life time pension.
Our State recently held a Primary Election which drew about 20% of the registered voters to the polls. We did a little better percent in my county because we had a good contest for the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives who will run against the Democrat incumbent for the seat in November. Now this will be a hotly contested seat in November and who knows we may get 35% or even 40% of the registered voters out for that.
We will also elect a new President in November (this is important, the person that gets this job is the most powerful person on earth). However, we still will not get more then 35% to 40% of registered voters out for this contest. (Remember this percentage of people voting is only of the registered voters and that is only a small percent of the people eligible to vote.) The candidates for President have been campaigning for over a year and we still have two months before the election. I dont know how much the candidates have spent so far, but it appears that they each have been getting donations of about $20 million per month. Now that amounts to a lot of money over the last year. What could we do to improve the good old USA, fight cancer or a lot of other things that would be a lot better spent then on a campaign.
I fall into the old guy group (over 70) and most of the friends I have vote.
You may think your vote doesnt count, but we vote so we have the right to complain when things are not done our way. But if you dont vote YOUR VOTE DOESNT COUNT so dont complain about who you get in office.
I have only one hope with this article, that just ten people read it and decide to vote this year for the first time. If only a few new people would listen and read about our candidates this year we might just get some help with all those things that really need to be done next year.
Remember, if you dont VOTE your VOTE wont count.
