Why Teacher Don't Use Textbooks In Teaching Science

Science is one of the core elements of a quality education. Its importance in education makes it one of the most funded programs in public schools. In an attempt to teach kids the most up-to-date science information teachers are turning away from traditional textbooks. Instead they are working with Internet articles, science journal articles, news items and science fair projects.

The Internet

The Internet is perhaps the most valuable resources sciene teachers have at their disposal. It provides them with a direct link to science organizations, science materials and science news items. The Internet can also be used for conducting science fair project research, for sharing science findings between students and for maintaining a connection between the active science field and school students.

Science News Items and Journal Articles

Another source of up-to-date science curriculum is the science news item. These news items can be harvested from blogs, from science websites, from science education portals, from science magazines and from peer reviewed science journal articles. Teachers can use these news items to stimulate discussions in class about the latest developments and findings in science, as well as to demonstrate how the scientific method works and how it sometimes fails.

Science Fair Projects

The final way in which teachers are enhancing the curriculum for science students is teaching modules on science fair projects. Science fair project modules encourage students to become scientists. This allows them to apply the science concepts that they have learned in class to problems that they are interested in. These projects also are a great way to assess what science students are learning and how well they are comprehending their science curriculum.

Using Textbooks?

While textbooks are no longer the primary tool used for science curriculum delivery, it still plays an important role in science education. The science textbook is used to introduce common science concepts that are theory or law. The information in the textbook is supplemented with science fair projects, news items and Internet resources.
